East of Eden has been one of my favorite books for years, and I love the depth you gave this portrait. With the ease of digital art, it seems like a lot of portraits look more like stock art than inspired, with bland faces and generic expressions. This skips past all that nonsense and gets straight to showing a person, not an ideal. Even without a knowledge of the book and characters, it's obvious that this speaks to a wide audience because of the depth of detail you put into this. I know this sounds silly, but I love the sweater and the shadows under his eyes. He looks so young, until you see his eyes, and he's aged by the focus he has on whatever he's looking at.
